Scope and object This part of IEC 61587 specifies environmental requirements@ test set-up@ as well as safety aspects for empty enclosures@ i.e. cabinets@ racks@ subracks and chassis under indoor conditions. The purpose of this standard is to establish defined levels of physical performance in order to meet certain requirements of storage@ transport and final location conditions. It applies in whole or part only to the mechanical structures of cabinets@ racks@ subracks and chassis@ but it does not apply to electronic equipment.

This standard applies to enclosures for electrical equipment intended to be installed and used in non-hazardous locations in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, CSA C22.1, the provisions of the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70, and the provisions of Mexico's Electrical Installations, NOM-001-SEDE, as follows: a) Enclosures for indoor locations, Types 1, 2, 5, 12, 12K, and 13; and b) Enclosures for indoor or outdoor locations, Types 3, 3R, 3S, 4, 4X, 6, and 6P. This standard covers additional environmental construction and performance requirements for enclosures. The general requirements for enclosures are contained in standard CSA C22.2 No. 94.1, UL 50, and NMX-J-235/1-ANCE (See Annex b, Ref. No. 10) or the end-use product standards that are to be used in conjunction with this standard. This standard does not cover the requirements for protection of devices against conditions such as condensation, icing, corrosion, or contamination that may occur within the enclosure or that may enter via conduit or unsealed openings. Where an individual product standard contains requirements that are at variance with those of this standard, the requirements of the individual product standard take precedence.

This standard applies to enclosures for electrical equipment intended to be installed and used in non-hazardous locations in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, CSA C22.1, the provisions of the National Electrical Code, NFPA 70, and the provisions of Mexico's Electrical Installations, NOM-001-SEDE, as follows: Enclosures for indoor locations, Types 1, 2, 5, 12, 12K, and 13; and Enclosures for indoor or outdoor locations, Types 3, 3R, 3S, 4, 4X, 6, and 6P. This standard covers the non-environmental construction and performance requirements for enclosures to provide a degree of protection to personnel against incidental contact with the enclosed equipment. The additional environmental construction and performance requirements for enclosures are located in C22.2 No. 94.2, UL 50E, and NMX-J-235/2-ANCE (See Annex b, Ref. No. 14), which are intended to be used in conjunction with this standard. Where an individual product standard contains requirements that are at variance with those of this standard, the requirements of the individual product standard take precedence. In the United States and Mexico, cabinets and cutout boxes and junction and pull boxes are covered by Clauses 9 and 10 of this Standard. In Canada, junction boxes, cutout boxes, and pull boxes are covered by CSA C22.2 No. 40 and are not covered by this standard. See Annex b, Ref. Examples of these devices are: MCBs, RCDs switches, fuse-systems, indicating lamps, relays, socketoutlets, timing switches, etc. Compliance with this document does not preclude the need for compliance with other relevant specifications. This document needs not apply to type tested and partially type tested assemblies which are covered by other specifications. The means of fixing envisaged in this document are mounting rails. Other possible means of fixing may be used but are not covered by these recommendations. NOTE The only criterion chosen in this document for co-ordination of dimensions has been the geometry of the devices. When selecting the enclosure, other criteria should be taken into account, e.g. the rated current of the devices.
